The 2023 CitizenSnap Report

At Snap, kindness powers our business. Helping our global Snapchatter community to express themselves, live authentically in the moment, and connect with others informs all that we do, from how we build our products to how we conduct ourselves as a business.

We define our success in terms of the positive impact of our products and policies on both people and the planet — and we present that impact with the honesty and transparency that defines our platform.

Our fourth annual CitizenSnap Report captures Snap’s progress toward our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals in 2022. In 2022 and in every year, we aim to be at the forefront of challenges that the Snapchat community cares about the most, including gender equality, educational opportunities to underrepresented communities, online safety, and environmental sustainability.

Among other accomplishments, in 2022, Team Snap:

  • Reduced global energy consumption using Snapchat by an average of 12% per user and committed to an additional $10M annual investment in carbon removal projects through 2030.

  • Contributed over 8,270 volunteer hours to community-building projects around the world.

  • Expanded our Safety Advisory Board from 7 members to 17 — including three youth advocates.

  • Provided new pathways for learning and leadership for high school students through the inaugural Snap Lens Academy.

“We are proud of the momentum we built in ESG during 2022, particularly in the areas of supporting education for aspiring creators and decreasing our carbon footprint per user. But, to borrow from the report, ‘This work is never done,’” said Nana Wilberforce, Snap’s Head of Sustainability. “Constant innovation and improvement are tenets of life at Snap, and when it comes to our ESG goals, we strive to grow more ambitious each year. In 2023, we will continue to focus on improving the safety and accessibility of our platform, mitigating our environmental impact, and elevating diverse voices here at Snap and in our larger Snapchat community."
